Winter Nets 2010
I have provisionally booked nets at the Marsh Academy again this year. Subject to confirmation, they will run between 4pm and 5.30pm on the following eight Sunday afternoons: 21st & 28th Feb; 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th March; 11th and 18th April. As with previous years, I have not booked 4th April (Easter Sunday). I will confirm the dates with Marsh Academy after the AGM on Friday.
Retirements
First of all, I'd like to apologise to my friends and colleagues about my lack of communication over the winter. As many of you know, I was dealt some challenging health news last summer, but in November I was given the most wonderful opportunity to take an extended stay in an alternative health clinic in Germany. I won't dwell on the details. Suffice to stay that there were a dozen or more weird daily treatments, including large quantities of organic coffee, although sadly it was for pumping up my back passage, rather than for drinking!
Anyway, I returned just before Christmas, and I am delighted to say that I am feeling better than I have for a decade. Fitter, younger, and a stone lighter. And the future prognosis is good. I'll be around for a season or two yet! But I want to thank all of you who have been in touch, especially to those who tried to make contact but didn't get a response.
I am very excited about the season ahead, although I want to pay a personal tribute to three rocks of the club who have decided that 2009 was their last league season for Bilsington. First of all, every one of us owes a debt of gratitude to Robin Smith. He has been a marvellous ambassador for the club, as player, as a former captain of the league side, as a friend. I've never learned to play Robin's inswinger, and I'll never understand where the power to hit a cricket ball so hard comes from. Since I have been captain, Robin has always made a point of offering helpful and welcome advice - I really will miss him in the side. Sunday's loss is Saturday's gain, because Robin will continue to play friendlies for a good while longer yet!
The end of the 2009 season also saw Paul Frith hanging up his gloves. Frithy has been a superb wicket keeper for Bilsington, and a wonderful opening bat. And no one should forget his nagging, irritating medium pace. A genuine all rounder! I'll always remember the first league game that we played against Exiles a few seasons back, when Frithy and I bowled a dozen or more frugal overs between us to shut the game down. And then the ribbing he gave me when I didn't ask him to bowl again for most of the rest of the season! Frithy has always made me smile - not least when he used to leave me a voicemail to let me know when he had switched his mobile phone on, in case I needed to get in touch. It's a huge shame that Frithy is retiring, and I still hope to change his mind once again!
Last, but not least, I received a letter this week from Steve Hills, confirming that he just doesn't get excited about playing cricket any more. Last season was a tough one, and the league's stance on what happened at the start of the season really knocked him for six, if you'll excuse the pun. Steve was the best out and out batsman that Bilsington has had in my time at the club, and he batted with real class and maturity. He batted how we were taught to bat as kids. Play yourself in. Get a feel for the ball. And then just when you thought he was starting to look settled, he'd pull a decent delivery over midwicket for four, or even sometime six. He was a very supportive vice captain to me, and both he and Nicci were real club people - whether they were fundraising, barbecuing, playing or supporting! Steve, I hope the fire returns, and I wish you well in the meantime. (Ed Peppitt reporting)

Indoor Side Suffer Defeat
Following on from the convincing win over Little Chart, confidence was high as we took on Ashford 3rds. Unfortunately Danny and Sean were unavailable so in came Tim and Gregg.
Ashford were invited to bat by skipper Paul Webb and made a disastrous start as Paul struck with his first and fourth deliveries (including a c+b!!) as Ashford slumped to 0-2. Alan bowled a decent first over but runs were scored off Trev as Ashford progressed to 30 off 3 overs. Matt bowled a tight first over and pressure was beginning to build as Alan struck to take the third wicket. James Rodway then reached his 25 and retired. Tim then run out the last Ashford batsmen, which meant James Rodway came back in. Ashford's last pair batted sensibly, despite barracking from their own fans, and eventually set a target of 120.
Things started badly as Tim ran out Trev without facing a ball. Paul came in and hit a few lusty blows as we reached 38 in the 4th over. Unfortunately Paul was out going for another 6 and Matt quickly followed (run out by Tim) and then Alan (run out by Tim). It was then left to Tim and Gregg to try and score the runs. Tim was out to an excellent catch and Gregg was last man out, his wicket was obviously the prize wicket, going by the celebrations of the bowler, James Rodway.
If we want to extend the season, we need to beat Mersham in our final group game, on December 6

Indoor Team Get off to a Flyer
With players showing interest in the 2009 indoor season, the start was eagerly anticipated. First game was against Little Chart and indoor skipper, Paul Webb, duly won the toss and invited Little Chart to bat.
7 runs came off the first, including the only wide conceded by Bilsington, bowled by Paul. Alan, making his indoor debut, bowled tightly causing the batsman a few problems. Danny also bowled a tight first over. Trev struck with his first ball, caught by Paul to dismiss one of the openers. The fielding was tight, the bowling tighter as Danny struck with the first ball of his next over, this time caught by Matt. Another wicket from Trev, caught by Alan was soon followed by three run outs, first by Matt, then by Alan, then Paul as Little Chart subsided to 45 all out in 7.1 overs.
In reply, Trev and Sean started things off. Taking their time to size up the bowling but runs started to flow. Nothing stupid was necessary and despite a few close calls, they slowly made in roads into the target. A change of bowling by Little Chart saw the first boundary six scored by Sean and victory duly came in less than 7 overs for the loss of no wickets.
A seemingly ruthless display by Bilsington with team manager, Tim Cragg, stating that it was more nervous watching both innings rather than playing!! Tim also added that this was the best we had bowled for some time.
Well done lads. Roll on Ashford next week

Final Fantasy Cricket Results.
The Fantasy Cricket concluded last week and the results were announced on Club Day. I would like to thank everybody who entered we had 44 teams take part with each team paying £5. So £220 was collected with £50 going to Prize money that meant £170 going to the club so a great contribution. It was also a great deal of fun and added an interesting element to the season. I shall be doing it again next season with some slight alterations so look out for details on Fantasy Cricket Season 2 the more people who enter the more money we make for the club. Colin Bingham took first prize and earned himself £40.

Club Day a Big Success Again
Bilsington Club Day dawned wet and miserable. With puddles on the square and the outfield very damp under foot it was not looking promising. With very few people there at 11.30 (partly due to the road being closed between Hamstreet and Ruckinge) the day was off to a bad start. The rain did stop at about 11.30 and the people began to turn up. The Ashton Family arrived, each year they seem to grow bigger, with 10 players ready for cricket. Colin Bingham sorted out the format and 3 Teams were sorted and ready for play. The basic format was each Team of 10 would bat in pairs for 2 overs each with each team getting 10 overs, every time a batsman was out would cost 5 runs.
Preparations Begin

With the pitch looking a bit like a swamp Barry decided to run the roller over it to try and remove the rain. With this done and with the clock approaching 1pm the games got under way. The first match saw The Ashtons Team take on Trevs Team (It started as Alans team but the Captaincy was passed to Trev).
The Ashton Team

The Aston team beginning well with a victory and taking the first points of the day. The skies were still grey but it was improving and the BBQ had been lit and the tombola was in full swing (with Ed doing his Christmas Shopping).
Trevs Team

As there were only 3 Teams Trevs Team played the next game against Danny's Team. With the result going Trevs way, so we now had 2 Teams with 1 win each. This mean't that the 3rd game between the Ashtons and Danny's team would decide who played in the final, Danny's team needing to win.
Danny's Team

Dannys team managed to win a tight game. We now had 3 teams all with 1 win. Attention turned to Colin to decide how to seperate the teams. Trevs team had scored 14 boundaries so they were in the Final. Dannys Team and the Ashtons were level on boundaries so it was decided that these 2 teams would have a bowl off. Despite both teams sending down nearly 30 deliveries only about 5 actually hit with Danny's team coming out on top.
BBQ and Tombola going well

The Final between Trev's Team and Danny's was another close game with Trev's team batting first and scoring 37. Danny's team got off to a steady start and built a score by not losing wickets. It was only when Danny's team had scored over 50 that they lost a couple of wickets. Danny's team completing a victory and taking the Mike Ashton Trophy.
Runner Up Captain Trev and Winning Captain Danny

As usual the whole day was a fantastic success and well worth braving the early grim weather, we were rewarded with the sun peeking through at about 5 pm. The main feature of the day is of course the cricket but it would not be much of a day with out the enthusiasm and the help of several people. Firstly Colin and Barry for making up the format and selecting the teams and Umpiring/Scoring for the whole day with Jacko helping out later in the day. For Janet, Kirsty, Michaela and Nan for organising the Tombola and taking the money for the BBQ and the drinks. Big big thanks goes to Ian and Angela Robinson doing a fantastic job by spending the day manning the BBQ helped by Colin and Ross. Barry and Sylvia for sorting out the Drink and Ed for getting the meat. The day also saw the last 50 Club draw with Martin Larkin taking the top prize. As a club we all thank Janet for her hard work in fund raising and running the 50 Club for another successful year we would not be able to operate as a club without this much needed cash. The Fantasy Cricket was also concluded with Colin Bingham finishing top of the league and Trev finishing as the highest runs scorer. (More on this in another entry) And last but certainly not least we must thank the Ashton Family for again supporting the day and turning up on mass. It is a great day and a great tribute to Mike Ashton a much missed player, making it a very special day for us and of course for Sam and Ben long may it continue.

Long Trip for Saturday Side but Webby Ton Secures Victory
Match report
V Preston
After a long travel up north, Bilsington finally arrived at Preston for their next game. Preston had an under-strength team with a few good youths. Bilsington had a very strong side with their top five run getters, and some strong bowlers including ex-player Steve Lilly (who returned for a star appearance).
Mike won the toss and decided to bat first and Bilsington put on 33 runs very quickly but then lost Sean as he tried to cut a ball that was too close to him and got caught behind.
Paul and Trev put on 94 for the 2nd wicket and Trev picked up his sixth fifty of the season, until he got himself stumped ( he nearly got stumped the previous ball too!!!)
Paul continued batting and got his 50 and then collected his 100 which put him over 600 runs for the season. He ended with 126 not out his highest score of his cricketing career. He put on 113 with Andy (who only scored!). Mike decided to declared in the 35th over (it was a 40 overs game), so we could have more time in the pub!
Steve and Alan opened the bowling and Steve struck in his first over with a good catch from Andy with the sun in his eye. Steve ripped through the top order but Paul Cork was playing some great shots to keep Preston in the hunt. Cork then played a hook shot which found the middle of the bat , Dave Nice was on the boundary but it was looking to be going over Dave’s head and to make things worse he tripped over but at that moment he stuck out his hand in mid-trip and the ball landed in his hand!!! It was one of the best catches I’ve ever seen!! I am sure a lot of people who saw that will agree.
Steve finished his bowling with 4-29 and put Preston at 71-6. But Gerry Weavill opened his shoulders and played some good powerful shots and quickly got 61 and Preston were at 157-7 and there could be an upset. But Andy removed the dangerous batsman with the only straight ball of his spell! Bilsington could have finished the game earlier but Danny dropped a straight forward catch as wicketkeeper.
Mike decided to give Sean a spell and Sean’s first field change was to remove Dave from silly point to close mid-wicket and the batsman’s first shot from Sean was a simple catch to silly point!!! But the next went straight to Dave.
Bilsington won by 57 runs. It was a good batting pitch with a very fast outfield! Bilsington celebrated their win in the pub. With Mike and Alan still celebrating when I left and hearing on Sunday morning from a reliable source they possibly overstayed their welcome at the pub. Some people have all the luck!.

Sunday Side score 300 to secure 100% Friendly Record in 2009.
With the League Season finishing on a high the Sunday Side had the chance to complete a 100% winning record in friendlies for 2009. With more than 11 players available Ed stood down for the day and in his last Sunday Game Robin took the reins as skipper. He lost the toss and was asked to bat by the Ulcombe Skipper. The weather was breezy and a there was an autum chill in the air so Sean and Trev opening got of to a steady start. They put on 99 for the first wicket with Sean passing his 50, he then asked Ed, who was umpiring, should he retire Ed ever the diplomat said yes! Sean gestured to Robin who replied no get yourself out..you normally do. A couple of balls later Sean took a big swing missed and was bowled for 54. Paul Webb joined Trev who was looking to carry his bat. The partnership did not last long as Trev smashed a ball straight down the ground, it clipped the bolwers foot and hit the stumps with Paul out of his ground, run out for 7. Skipper for the day Robin promoted himself to No 4 and soon got stuck in to the bowling his first scoring shot being a 6. Batting with Trev for about 10 overs Robin soon caught and passed Trev getting to his first 50 of the season. Trev continued to give Robin the strike(he told me to say this) but was unlucky to be out for 45, Robin and Trev putting on 101 for the 3rd Wicket. Colin came in at 5 and again looked for the singles to help Robin plus hitting a few lusty blows. After being helped by a couple of dropped catches Robin hit the single he needed to get to his 100. After 29 years of playing cricket this was his first ever century and he was surprised as well as chuffed. Colin was caught for 20 and Andy Robinson joined Robin for the last 4 overs. With the last ball before tea Robin and Andy scored the single that took the score to 300 certainly the highest score most of us could remember, 300-4 in 40 overs Robin 121 Not Out, (including 10 4's and 9 6's) and Andy 17 Not Out.
After tea and with Jumpers safely on we went out to field. Luke Bingham opened the bowling with Ian and it was after 6 overs that Ian took the first wicket, the opener clipping a ball off his legs to man of the moment Robin just behind square who casually ran in and took a cocky one handed catch. Luke took the next wicket when the other opener hit the ball straight to mid on and the catch was taken by you know who.. Robin again (if only it was lottery day). Danny replaced Luke and got a wicket in his first over and Colin replaced Ian. The Ulcombe number 3 seemed to of made up his mind where he wanted to hit Colin and spotting this Colin set a 9-0 Leg Side Field unfortunately the batsman managed to hit to the off side leaving Colin 2 long chases to collect the ball. He did get himself a wicket and a sore back which left him finishing the day fielding in a chair, under a blanket, replaced by a girl!. Graham Samson replaced Danny and again picked up a couple of Wickets (its becoming a habit) and Sean fresh from his success the day before picked up a wicket. It was left to Paul Webb bowling some very gentle seamers to get 3 of the last 4 wickets including a nice catch from Luke and his first ever stumping, to take his tally to 40 for the season. Ulcombe all out for 142 and another big win secured. The Sunday Side boasting an impressive 100% record for friendly matches in 2009 well done lads.
Robin a 29 year wait comes to an end.
